Cynthia FolsomCindy Folsom MS, PT

I grew up in Portland, Maine and worked for 4 years at various jobs, including being a weight training instructor in the Lifeline program at the University of Southern Maine, before beginning college at age 22.  I had assumed I would study physical therapy and then work primarily with athletes.  I even spent 3 years at Springfield College in Massachusetts, which is known for their focus on athletic endeavors.  After spending 5 years on an undergraduate degree in Human Sciences and 3 years in a graduate progam in Physical Therapy, both at the University of Rhode Island, graduating in 1992, I began working in a variety of settings including home health, rehabilitation, acute care, nursing homes, and out-patient clinics.  It was during this time that I began to notice that injuries, whether sports induced or icy front steps induced, were all perceived by the body the same way.  I also began to notice that treating all injuries with the traditional concepts I had learned in my academic training was not sufficient to match the magnificent and complex protective responses of the body.  It was the search for more in depth interventions that lead me down the path of manual therapy.

In my treatment approach, I locate the protective patterns of the Autonomic Nervous System to address what the body feels is the underlying area of concern.  I then follow the hierarchy of priority of the holding to assist the body in its healing process, which is unique to each issue.  I find that working with the nervous system and the reactive/protective response of the body is especially helpful in the treatment of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and physical problems related to emotional concerns.  Pelvic floor and bladder difficulties also respond quite readily to these light-touch, very non-invasive techniques; all of which are performed fully clothed in a pleasant, private treatment room.

I am very happy to have joined Greater Brunswick PT in June of 2000.  And am especially happy to have such a short commute from my home in Topsham!
